Tumakuru, Feb.2: Tilak Park Police in the district have registered a case against Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell for having made a provocative speech in public here, in relation to the murders of Praveen Nettaru and Fazil in Dakshina Kannada.
The police filed the FIR against Pumpwell on Wednesday, based on a complaint filed by Syed Burhanuddin, resident of Bar Line in the city.
On Saturday, Pumpwell made controversial statements on Mohammed Fazil who was killed last year in Mangaluru’s Surathkal following the death of BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettar the Godhra riots and said that Tumakuru “will also be a factory of Hindutva in the coming days” during the VHP’s Shourya Yatra.
“Nobody sat in their homes after the death of 59 karsevaks in Gujarat. They barged into the homes. Only 59 karsevaks were but how many were killed in retaliation? Even today there is no count. Nearly 2,000 people were killed in Gujarat. It shows the capacity of the Hindus.”

A day later, Pumpwell made similar remarks in Mangaluru’s Ullal.
Pumpwell said “The district of Dakshina Kannada wept when Praveen Nettar was murdered. The stability of Hindu society had collapsed. During such a time, some youths thought: ‘We have lost a great activist. We won’t let his sacrifice go in vain.’ Then, they went to Surathkal and attacked in public. You have seen the videos. It shows the bravery of the Hindu youth.”
“The riots in Gujarat were not a genocide. It showed the might and bravery of the Hindus. You burned to death 59 karsevaks, but when Hindus react to it, you call it genocide. It was a day showcasing the might of the Hindus.
“If there is a need we are ready to fight and attack. It is the power of the Bajrang Dal. Here is a warning: if one of our activists is attacked and hospitalised, your 10 people will be hospitalised. Our activists are prepared for this.”
Pumpwell told to media that he doesn’t justify anyone’s murder.
“I have not compared the deaths of Nettar and Fazil. The meaning of my statement was if Nettar was not murdered, the other deaths wouldn’t have occurred. I have not given a statement justifying Fazil’s murder. Our organisation doesn’t commit murders and we don’t justify crimes,” Pumpwell said.
Following Pumpwell’s statement, Fazil’s father, Umar Faruq, filed a complaint with the Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar to arrest and investigate the latter. A case is yet to be booked.
