Gaya, Bihar, January, 1: Earlier she “swept” the streets of Gaya town in Bihar. Today she “swept” the polls. Till yesterday, she was the safaikarmachari. Today she is the Deputy Mayor of Gaya Town Municipal Corporation.

This is the “rags to riches” story of Chinta Devi, a 60-year old lady in Gaya town of Bihar state.
“I have carried human excreta on my head. I have swept the streets of Gaya. I have sold lemons in the market place. Today, I just can’t believe that I am the Deputy Mayor of the same Municipal Corporation where I used to work as safaikarmachari,” emotion-struck Chinta Devi told the media, after she was declared as the Deputy Mayor.

Chinta Devi’s three sons are also working as safaikarmachari in the same Gaya Municipal Corporation.
Though Chintadevi retired two years ago, she continued to work as safaikarmachari on contract basis. Her commitment and dedication during Covid – 19 earned her a great respects.
Chinta Devi is a widow and illiterate. She hesitated to file her nomination papers. But the union of safaikarmacharis persuaded her to contest the elections.
“We told her that as Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillor she can help the other safaikarmachari colleagues by taking appropriate decisions. Then she agreed to contest the polls,” Sunil Kumar Srivastava, a social-activist said.
