Washington.Nov.2: The US has received intelligence from Saudi Arabia that Iran may attack the Kingdom and targets in the kingdom and Erbil in Iraq. The Wall Street Journal reported about Saudi sharing the intelligence with the US on Tuesday.
“We are concerned about the threat picture, and we remain in constant contact through military and intelligence channels with the Saudis,” the National Security Council said in a statement, the AP reported. “We will not hesitate to act in the defence of our interests and partners in the region.”
Intel about the threat comes at a time when the Biden administration has been criticising Tehran for its crackdown on widespread protests. Washington has also been critiquing Tehran’s decisions to support Russia with technical support in the form of drones to use in its war in Ukraine. Iran has alleged that Saudi Arabia and other rivals are behind the protests that have been going on in the country for over 45 days. Protests have been taking to the streets since September 17 after a 23-year-old woman was killed in police custody for not wearing hijab in accordance with the country’s strict government standards.
According to one of the officials who confirmed the intelligence, the threat is credible and an attack could take place soon or within 48 hours.
No US embassy or consulate in the region has issued alerts or guidance to Americans in Saudi Arabia or elsewhere in the Middle East based on the intelligence.
