Belagavi, September 5: Seer Sri Basava Siddalinga the pontiff of Guru Madivaleshwara Mutt at Neginhal village, Bailahongal taluk in the district has allegedly committed suicide by hanging at the Mutt.
Sri Basava Siddalinga Swami, 28, seer of Sri Guru Madiwaleshwar Math was found dead by his devotees in the early hours. His attendants forced open the door and retrieved his body. Followers and villagers soon gathered outside the Math.
In an informal discussion with his followers recently, he had expressed displeasure at his life. He was upset that his name had appeared in an audio clip in which two women had spoken about the character of some seers and their alleged illicit relationships. Police suspect this could be the reason behind the seer’s decision to end his life.
The seer is suspected to have committed suicide after an audio clip related to him went viral recently. Two women had spoken about the seer in the audio clip, which may have prompted the pontiff to take the extreme step, it is said.
Bailahongal police have rushed to the Mutt and are investigating the case.
