Udupi: A controversy erupted in Karnataka on Monday after a road was named after Mahatma Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse. Images and videos of a concrete signboard displaying it were shared on social media.
The signboard reads ‘Padugiri Nathuram Godse Raste’ in Kannada which translates to ‘Padugiri Nathuram Godse Road’.
Godse’s name was inscribed on the nameplate of Padugiri Road in the Bola Gram Panchayat. After a few locals and youth Indian National Congress workers protested against it, police personnel and gram panchayat officials removed the installation. Panchayat officials stated that there were unaware of who did this, sources said.
The pictures of the road sign have gone viral on social media platforms, drawing criticism. A probe has been launched to find the miscreants.
Reacting to this, Congress leader and MP Manickam Tagore accused the ruling BJP in the state trying to spread the ideology and philosophy of Godse.
“People of Karnataka will give stern reply to RSS and BJP whenever they get the opportunity. Karnataka is a state which believes in Gandhiwad and celebrates it,” said Tagore.
