New Delhi, April 22: Days after he made some adverse remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Pulwama attack, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Satya Pal Malik was summoned by the CBI in the ‘group insurance scam’

“He has been asked to depose before the CBI officer in the two graft cases amounting to Rs 300 crore in the group medical insurance scheme of J & K registered in April 2022, based on bribery allegation leveled him,” spokesman of the CBI said.

The CBI contacted Malik this week for his time to depose in the matter in view of the questions and clarification sought from him in the case which is currently under investigation.

The case goes back to 2018 and 2019 during Malik’s Governorship of J & K. The files that went to him apparently pertained to awarding of contract for a group insurance scheme for government staff and a civil work linked to to a hydroelectric project. Following the charges of irregularities, Malik cancelled the contract.

Malik has offered to make himself available either on April 27 or 28 depending o his availability in view of his personal schedule.

“The process of recording the statement may happen either in CBI guest house or in his residence,” sources said.

Malik, who was Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, had made the disclosure at an event in Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan in October 2021 following which the CBI registered two FIRs in the bribery allegations in April 2022.

“Secretaries of two departments told me that I would get Rs 150 crores if I approve the deals. I said I have come with five pairs of kurta and pyjama and I will go with that,” Malik had told the gathering.

Malik told the gathering at Jhunjhunu that he canceled both deals after the secretaries alerted him that there was a scam.
