Bengaluru, February 13: The Karnataka Congress on Monday dropped a bombshell by accusing the Union BJP government of having a captive judiciary through inducements after having failed to worm it’s way into Supreme Court collegium.
In an exclusive chat with The Newz Peg, Senior Congress leader Prof Radhakrishna said the appointment of Justice Abdul Nazeer is a classic instance of making attempts to have a captive judiciary through offering the promise of lucrative positions post – retirement.
“We have nothing personally against Justice Nazeer. He is a very fine human being and a thorough gentleman. He is a man of integrity. But the BJP is using all sorts of tricks to have a captive judiciary,” Prof Radhakrishna added.
Prof Radhakrishna, who is also the Member of the Election Manifesto Drafting Committee, said that the recent appointments of the Governors, especially, Justice Nazeer should be juxtaposed with the recent attempts of the Centre to have its way into the Apex Court Collegium.
“The war of words between the Supreme Court and Union Law Minister Kiran Rijiju is too fresh to be forgotten or too simple to be ignored,” the Congress leader said.
According to Prof Radhakrishna, it was an irony that a man like L.K.Advani had fought for the independence of the judiciary whereas his followers are making a rather devious attempts to establish a captive judiciary.
“Advani was harsh on Smt Indira Gandhi and had accused the Congress of trying to set up a captive judiciary. Now Advani’s successors are doing exactly the same thing,” Prof Radhakrishna added.
Prof Radhakrishna quoted senior BJP leader and former Law Minister Late Arun Jaitley who had said, “post retirement appointments influence pre-retirement judgements.
“Jaitley had made this statement in 2013 when he was leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. This is true in the present decision of the BJP government in appointing Justice Nazeer as Governor of Andhra Pradesh,” Prof Radhakrishna signed off.
