Chennai, February 3: About 21 senior advocates of Chennai have written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu to reject the Supreme Court’s Collegium recommendation to appoint advocate Victoria Gowri as Judge of the Madras High Court.
“Victoria Gowri is known for delivering hate speeches against the minorities. She is often seen in the programmes organized by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Her name has been recommended by the Apex Court’s Collegium to be appointed as Judge of the Madras High Court. We appeal to you to reject the Collegium’s recommendation,” the team of lawyers have stated in their letter.

The 21-member team of lawyers include N. G. R. Prasad, R. Vaigai and V. Suresh. The Supreme Court’s Collegium had made the recommendation on January 17. “We are shocked to know that the Colleguim has recommended Victoria Gowri’s name. All her hate speeches are available on the YouTube and other social media platforms,” the letter written by the team of lawyers stated.

The lawyers also flagged Victoria Gowri’s comments on love jihad and conversion. “She (Victoria Gowri) had accused the Roman Catholics of indulging in nefarious activities and insisted that Bharatanatyam should not be performed for Christian songs. She is a rapid anti-minority person,” the letter stated.
According to those who are opposing the appointment of Victoria Gowri as Judge, her statements amount to inciting communal discord and call for registration of criminal cases against her.

“Victoria Gowri’s regressive views are against the secular values of the Constitution. Her statements reflect deep-rooted religious bigotry that makes her unfit to be appointed as High Court judge. Can any litigant belonging to Muslim and Christian faith ever hope to get justice in her court if she becomes a judge?,” the lawyers asked.
The lawyers have also written separate letters to the three judges who are members of the Collegium urging them to withdraw their recommendation. “The Collegium’s recommendation of a person who harbours such strong antipathy towards the minorities is disturbing, to say the least,” the letter stated.
