Mangaluru, January 23: Karnataka’s traditional buffalo race ‘kambala’ is gaining popularity across the globe.
Hundreds of people from Afghanistan, Germany and Denmark visited Mangaluru to watch ‘kambala’ a sport where men run with the buffaloes in a slushy paddy fields.

On Sunday, these foreign spectators visited Goldfinch city in Mangaluru where ‘kambala’ was held.
“We have learnt about this sport through Online. We have also learnt about Srinivas Gowda who runs faster than Usain Bolt,” a lady spectator from Germany said.

It may be recalled that Srinivas Gowda, a construction worker from Mijar in Moodabidri shot into fame in 2020 when he covered 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds. Translated into 100 meters, it works out to 9.55 seconds, which is 0.03 seconds faster than Usain Bolt’s world record time of 9.58 seconds.
Henri from Denmark said, “We were on a business trip. We had learnt about this kambala and Srinivas Gowda Online. We were keen to watch this sport”

Henri was accompanied by Thomas, Carsten, Pete and Susanna, all from Denmark.
Sayyed Ahmed, an Afghan national and a student at Mangalore University, also watched kambala along with his family for the first time.
“This kambala is a unique sport. The culture of Dakshina Kannada is beautiful,” Sayyed added.
