Bengaluru, Dec. 2: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday carried out raids on two hospitals of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) in Bengaluru and Hubballi and arrested an official in connection with an alleged fraud of Rs 96.43 lakh over a period of three and half years, a senior CBI official said here.

According to a release by the CBI, the accused is identified as K. Vasanth Kumar, an Assistant, working in the ESIC hospital in Peenay in Bengaluru.

The CBI stated that the accused while posted at the ESIC, Branch office, Bommasandra between January 29, 2016 to September 17, 2019 had connived with others and misappropriated the ESIC funds to the tune of Rs 96,43,936.

“This fund was meant for the benefit payments from ESIC Branch Office, Bommasandra and other branch offices. Kumar had misused his position by creating fake employer registrations through self-registration portal of the ESIC for employers. His modus operandi was simple by using fake or unused insurance numbers in the name of illegal beneficiaries to avail the benefits fraudulently,” the note explained.

The CBI said that detailed searches were carried out at two locations in Bengaluru and Hubballi where the sleuths have recovered incriminating documents related to fraud.

The CBI has registered a case and investigations are still on.
