Bangalore, Dec 25: Transgender and bisexual activist Akkai Padmashali has urged Sushil Modi, BJP Rajya Sabha MP, to apologize for his remarks on the issue of same sex marriage.
In a letter addressed to Sushil Modi, Padmashali said she agrees with Sushil Modi’s statement that “only biological men and biological women should marry” and not to legalise the same sex marriage.
“Your statement goes against the spirit of freedom of choice as enshrined in the Constitution. Freedom of choice includes freedom to choose sex. Marriage is a matter of right and it is applicable even to bisexuals/transgenders also” the letter stated.
According to Padmashali, gender is a spectrum. Moreover, denial of right to marry to transgenders is against the principles of equality.

“I am surprised, rather shocked to read your speech where you have said that same sex marriage is against nation’s culture and ethos. India is a country with diversified culture and we have celebrated unity in diversity. Your remarks are against this concept of India’s cultural diversity” Padmashali added.
She signed off by saying, “LGBTQI community will continue to campaign for its rights and will create awareness on the issue of rights of the sexual minorities”
