Islamabad, August 23: Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has received a show-cause notice from the Islamabad High Court in connection with the contempt case against him for threatening a female judge.
A three-judge panel heard the case, with Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani serving as the bench’s leader. Justices Babar Sattar and Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb were also present. Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani stated at the case hearing that the issue was of public interest and needed to be settled once and for all.
He added that judges were employed throughout Islamabad and that this issue did not only concern the female judge there. Justice Kayani questioned whether remarks made against the judge would follow a negative ruling.
According to Justice Kayani, going to court is a last choice for most people. He questioned whether the common person should administer their own justice and inquired where the people were being driven with these remarks.
According to Attorney General Jahangir Jadoon, he filed a range of petitions with the Islamabad High Court. The advocate general pleaded with the court in his motion that he wished to present Imran Khan’s history of anti-judiciary comments and utterances.
“I want to put Imran Khan’s video clip on the record,” said the applicant.
He requested the judge to let the petitioner play the video of the PTI chairman’s earlier comments attacking the judiciary and state institutions. The applicant asked the IHC to authorize the use of a USB or other digital device to play the content in the courtroom.
Imran Khan was given a show-cause notice by the court, and the matter was also forwarded to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Umar Ata Bandial due to the formation of a bench with more than three justices.
