Haveri: Former Chief Minister and MP Basavaraj Bommai has written to Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, urging that the Fasal Bima Yojana be made more farmer-friendly by conducting crop loss surveys using satellite technology based on the survey numbers of each affected farmer’s land.

In his letter, he emphasized that the Fasal Bima Yojana is a key farmer-centric initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Making the scheme more transparent and farmer-friendly would provide greater benefits to farmers. Currently, crop loss assessments are conducted at the gram panchayat level during droughts, floods, and other calamities. Instead, if the survey is conducted based on individual farmers’ land survey numbers, all genuinely affected farmers will receive insurance compensation, while unnecessary claims can be avoided.

Another crucial issue he highlighted is that crop loss assessments are based on estimates from the past seven years. However, due to unpredictable rainfall and climate variations, this method does not provide an accurate measure of actual losses. Therefore, the assessment should consider only the current and previous agricultural years. Implementing these two reforms would be highly beneficial for farmers. Additionally, since the insurance premium amount is already fixed, it would not impose any extra financial burden on the central or state governments.

By incorporating these improvements, the Fasal Bima Yojana will truly serve as a lifeline for farmers, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. Bommai requested the Union Minister to take necessary action and expressed his willingness to discuss the matter under the Minister’s leadership, Bommai said.
