Karnataka Government’s Major Move: Considering 4% Reservation for Muslim Community in Government Contracts

The Karnataka government is seriously considering a proposal to provide a 4% reservation for the Muslim community in government contracts. The Minority Welfare Department has submitted a proposal to the government, suggesting that the Muslim community be given a 4% reservation in these contracts.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed his response to this initiative. He stated that the government has conducted an in-depth review of the issue and a decision will be taken soon. The Chief Minister also clarified that reservations are already in place for SC, ST, and OBC communities in state contracts. Currently, SC and ST communities have a 24% reservation, OBC has 4%, and the 2A category has 15%, making a total of 43% reservation applied in government contracts.

Several ministers and legislators from the Muslim community have expressed support for this proposal. They have met with the Chief Minister and submitted a letter in favor of the proposal. Prominent Muslim leaders like Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, Rahim Khan, Political Secretary Nazir Ahmed, and legislators Tanveer Sheikh, Abdul Jabbar, N.A. Harris, Rizwan Arshad, Asif Sheikh, Khanija Fatima, Iqbal Hussain, and Balkheesh Banu have signed the letter, urging the Chief Minister to grant the 4% reservation in government contracts for the Muslim community.

Sources say,Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responded positively to the proposal and instructed the Finance Department to take necessary steps regarding this matter.

However,some media reports claimed that the government was considering a reservation proposal for Muslims, which the Chief Minister’s Office clarified by stating that while there is a demand for reservation, no official proposal has yet been placed before the government. The Chief Minister’s Office issued an official statement to inform media outlets and dismissed the reports.
