Gist of deliberations of CWMA in its 31st meeting held on 25.06.2024

The cumulative inflow into four reservoirs of Karnataka from 01.06.2024 to 24.06.2024 is 7.307 TMC. Whereas, the 30 years average (1989-90 to 2018-19) inflow in the same period is 24.448 TMC. The inflow with reference to 30 years average strikes a dismal percentage of 29.887.
Tamil Nadu has utilised 35.565 TMC from Mettur, Bhavani and Amaravathy reservoirs from 01.02.2024 to 31.05.2024 despite the Hon’ble Tribunal having not permitted Tamil Nadu any perennial crops. Despite prevailing 70.113% distress conditions at four reservoirs of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu has been making large releases into river from its reservoirs amounting to 3.97 TMC to date.
Karnataka has not released water in the canals to conserve storages in its four reservoirs for drinking water purposes.
The Authority is requested to watch the evolving situation up to the end of July, by taking stock of the hydrological scenario, a considered decision could be taken.
Karnataka will consider the release of water according to the behaviour of the monsoon and inflows to the four reservoirs of Karnataka.

Tamil Nadu has demanded that Karnataka has to be directed to ensure 5.367 TMC deficit flows at Biligundlu as on 24.06.2024 & also to ensure the flows for the remaining period of June 2024 and 31.24 TMC for July 2024 as per the schedule prescribed by the CWDT as modified by the Hon’ble Supreme Court.

Finally, CWMA directed that:
Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to conserve water in all the reservoirs for drinking water purpose and environmental flows for sustenance of flora and fauna.
The Hydrological situation would be reviewed in the next meeting schedule around 26.07.2024.
