Bengaluru, May 23: Congress MLA from Mangaluru Constituency, U T Khader is set to become the next Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
The 53-year old leader also held the position of deputy opposition leader in the previous assembly.
The party high command has reportedly approved the nomination of Khader as the Speaker of the assembly. Khader would become the first person from the minority community to hold the post.
Khader, a five-time MLA met with state party in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala and national general secretary K C Venugopal and held discussions. Khader will submit his nomination for the post of Speaker today. If the need be, elections will be held on Wedesday.
Earlier, the names of R V Deshpande, H K Patil, T B Jayachandra, Basavaraj Rayareddi, B R Patil and K N Rajanna were doing the rounds for the post of Speaker. Khader is a sitting MLA from the Mangalore Constituency in Dakshina Kannada. In the previous Siddaramaiah government, Khader was a Cabinet Minister.
