Bengaluru, May 14: Having lost the May 10 polls but emerged as the main Opposition party in the Assembly with 66 seats, the BJP is now embarked on the exercise to choose its BJP LP leader who would become the Leader of the Opposition in the Lower House.

The names of outgoing Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, former ministers S. Suresh Kumar, V. Sunil Kumar and Aravind Bellad are under consideration for the post.

The only factor that is working in Bommai’s favour is that he will be able to defend the party and also attack the government after having ran the administration for over three years.

However, Suresh Kumar also is being considered strongly due to his erudite character, abundant presence of mind, enormous political acumen and amazing earthy common sense.

“Moreover, Suresh Kumar enjoys a better credibility and probity in public life. Even his political opponents think twice to raise a finger against him,” a senior leader explained.

But a top leader of the BJP is said to be in favour of either Aravind Bellad or V. Sunil Kumar.

While Bellad is a Lingayath hailing from Dharwad, Sunil Kumar belongs to the Backward Idiga community from Karkala in Udupi district.

Some workers are pitching in for B Y. Vijayendra for the post of the leader of the Opposition given his clout among the community and in the party but being the first-time MLA is the only factor working against him.

Sources told The Newz Peg that the matter will be discussed at the level of Amit Shah and J. P Nadda but only after the Assembly is constituted and the government comes into existence.

Till then churning will be going on in the party.
