Bengaluru, February 12: Former Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa has urged the Centre to name Shimoga airport after Vishwamanava KUVEMPU.
“I am in the process of writing a formal letter to the Union Minister for Civil Aviation. I will also raise the issue in the Assembly,” Yediyurappa had said.

Eulogusing KUVEMPU as an ‘colossus’ whose contribution to the cause of Kannada literary world was phenomenal, Yediyurappa said KUVEMPU literally lived the life of Vishwamanava in the real and true sense of the word.

“It is in the fitness of things that the airport is named after that intellectual giant,” Yediyurappa added.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had said that he will suggest the name of Yediyurappa for the new Shimoga airport.
However, Yediyurappa had stoutly refused to lend his name. In fact, he had directly written to the Centre not to consider his name for the airport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the airport on February 27. Incidentally, that day happens to be the 80th birthday of Yediyurappa. Modi is likely to felicitate Yediyurappa during the programme.
