Bhubhaneshwar, January 29: Naba Kishore Das, Odisha health minister, was shot dead by Assistant Sub Inspector at Brajrajnagar town in Jharsuguda district on Sunday.
As Naba Das got out of his car near Gandhi Chowk to take part in an event, ASI Gopal Das fired at the health minister in his chest.
“There were hundreds of people at the spot to welcome the minister. Suddenly gun shots were heard. Then we saw the health Minister collapsing to the ground. He was profusely bleeding. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital,” Gupteshwar Bhoi, Sub-Divisional Police Officer told the media.
Naba Das was airlifted to Bhubhaneshwar. But he did not survive as he had been shot several times and was profusely bleeding.
“There were several gunshot wounds on the right chest of the health minister. Naba Das had fallen on the ground in a pool of blood,” Bhoi said.
Meanwhile, the ASI Gopal Das who fired at Naba Das has been taken into custody.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has condemned the incident and has ordered a CID probe.
