Hubli, January 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that the government is mulling to amend the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.PC) in order to make forensic evidence mandatory requirement in adjudication of criminal offences.

Speaking at a gathering after laying the foundation stone for the campus of National Forensic Sciences University in the premises of University of Agricultural Sciences at Dharwad, Amit Shah said with the criminals adopting new ways, means and techniques to commit crimes, forensic science has become crucial for containing crime and detecting criminals.

“There is a need for making policy changes in accordance with the time. The investigation has to be carried out based on forensic sciences. As of now, forensic evidence is a must for offences attracting imprisonment over six years. Now, we will make mandatory consideration of forensic evidence,” Amit Shah explained.
According to the Union Home Minister, the proposed National Forensic University will work towards encouraging academic learning of forensic sciences along with study of applied behavioural sciences.
“It will disseminate knowledge on cyber security, digital crime, DNA forensics and artificial intelligence,” he added.

Shah said agreements have been signed with 70 countries for offering forensic training and exchange of information on criminals.
“Finger prints of 1.50 crore criminals has been recorded in the National Crime Records Bureau,” the Umion Home Minister revealed.
Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said a forensic science university was the need of the hour as it would enable grooming of forensic experts through institutional and research set up along with crime detection.
