Bengaluru, January 13: Former Chief Minister and BJP strongman B. S. Yediyurappa has saved the honour, dignity and self-respect of Karnataka in the Republic Day tableau issue.
Following Yediyurappa’s intervention at the level of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the Ministry of Defence has agreed to consider the tableau of Karnataka but with a different theme. The Department of Information, Karnataka has been directed to come up with the theme of “Naari Shakti” for the tableau and get it ready before January 19 for full dress-rehearsal.
Karnataka’s new tableau with Naari Shakti as its theme will feature the statues of three women Padma Awardees – Saalumaradha Thimmakka, Soolagitthi Narasamma and Halakki Tulasi Gowda.
According to BJP as well as government sources, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai requested Yediyurappa to intervene and take up the issue at the highest level after the MoD rejected Karnataka’s tableau which had Millets as its theme.
“There was nothing wrong with the Millets theme, per se. But the Officials of the Department of Information failed to impress and convince the importance of Millets to the Committee for the Selection of Tableau in which Union Home Minister Amit Shah was present,” a top official confided with ‘The Newz Peg’ on the conditions of anonymity.

In fact, Millets theme was to have been given a positive look especially when Prime Minister Narendra Modi had declared 2023 as the International Year of Millet. However, the official who was entrusted with the task of explaining the Karnataka’s theme failed due to “lack of articulation, absence of good command over English and Hindi languages and inadequate knowledge of the subject”.
Following an uproar in the state over the rejection of Karnataka’s tableau by the Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and a few Kannada organisations, Bommai rushed to Yediyurappa and appealed to him to take up the matter with Rajnath Singh.
“Yediyurappa spoke to Rajnath Singh twice and persuaded the latter to consider Karnataka’s tablueau with a new theme. That’s how Karnataka managed to find its place in Republic Day, thanks to the timely and effective intervention of Yediyurappa. He (Yediyurappa) has saved Karnataka’s honour, self-respect and dignity,” a top official confided.
