New Delhi, January 4: Captain Shiva Chouhan of the Bengal Engineering Group (BEG) is the first female Army officer posted in Siachen Glacier.
Described as the most difficult and inhospitable battle field in the world, Siachen is very crucial for India as it the spot Pakistan wants to occupy “by hook or crook”

A native of Rajasthan and an Engineering Graduate hailing from a economically humble family, Shiva Chouhan was Commissioned into the Army’s Engineering Regiment in May 2021.
Soldiers of the Engineering Regiment are also called Sappers and in Shiva Chouhan’s case, she is called Bengal Sappers as she belongs to Bengal Engineering Group (BEG).
Shiva underwent rigorous training for six months at Siachen Battle School that included endurance training, ice wall climbing, avalanche and crevice rescue as well as survival drills.
Siachen is strategically important for India because of its location between Saltoro Ridge and Karakoram Range.

It is through the Karakoram Hill Ranges invaders in the past had entered India. It is because of this factor, Pakistan wants to occupy this crucial link. Captain Shiva Chouhan will be posted in Siachen for three to six months.
