New Delhi, Oct 11: The Chief Justice of India (CJI) U U Lalit has formally recommended Justice D Y Chandrachud’s name as his successor on Tuesday.
As per the tradition Justice D Y Chandrachud is set to be the 50th CJI. U U Lalit will be retiring from his office on November 8 after his short tenure of 74 days. Chandrachud will be assuming the charge for the next two years till November 10, 2024.
Justice Lalit was a renowned senior advocate before he became the judge of the apex court. He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court on August 13, 2014.
Justice Lalit has been the second CJI who was directly elevated to the Supreme Court bench from the Bar.
He was later appointed a special public prosecutor for the CBI to conduct the trial in the 2G spectrum allocation case.
