New Delhi, August 6: Jagdeep Dhankhar was on Saturday elected as the new Vice President of India. NDA’s candidate and former West Bengal Governor, Dhankhar defeated Opposition pick Margaret Alva in the elections held on Saturday. Dhankhar, bagged 528 votes against his Alva’s 182.
Earlier, on July 25, India got its first tribal woman President after Draupadi Murmu took charge of country’s top post. She defeated Opposition’s candidate Yashwant Sinha in the Presidential Elections held on July 18, 2022. The results were declared on July 21.

Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has decided to abstain from voting alleging lack of consultations while deciding on the name of Alva. TMC has 23 MPs in Lok Sabha and 16 in Rajya Sabha. Alva is likely to get over 200 votes, going by the support announced by parties for her candidature so far.
