DELHI, JULY 11: A Delhi Court issued summons and a notice of injunction to filmmaker Leena Manimekalai in connection with a suit seeking to prevent her from depicting the Hindu goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette
Judge Abhishek Kumar of the Tis Hazari Courts stated that the defendants must be heard before any orders are issued against them, and thus scheduled a hearing for August 6.
Manimekalai’s company, Touring Talkies Media Private Limited, was also served with summons and notice.
Advocate Raj Gaurav filed a case against Manimekalai, claiming that in her upcoming film, she depicted the Hindu goddess in a “uncalled for manner,” and that the film’s poster and promotional video also show her smoking a cigarette.
The suit argued that this not only offends the religious sentiments of ordinary Hindus, but also violates basic moral and decency principles.
According to Gaurav, the alleged poster was also tweeted by Manimekalai from her Twitter handle.
