Bengaluru, July 04: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Karnataka police has arrested Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Amrit Paul on Monday, July 4, in police sub-inspectors (PSI) recruitment scam. The CID arrested Paul after questioning him four times in the scam, where 40 out of the 545 selected candidates have been taken into custody for obtaining more marks by tampering with the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) answer sheets.
Paul was produced before the 1st ACMM court in Bengaluru, and the IPS officer was sent to CID custody till July 13. Senior IPS officer Amrit Paul was head of the recruitment cell when the scam came to light in April this year. The govt had transferred him after the scam surfaced under his tenure and was posted in the Internal Security Division, Bengaluru.
Earlier, a Deputy Superintendent of police in the recruitment department Shantaraju was arrested by the CID along with several other staff members who were employed in his office. The CID on Saturday, July 2, had arrested accused number one in the case Jagruth S, who was absconding for more than two months. The Court has sent the accused to 10-day police custody.
According to reports, during the CID investigation it was found that the staff of the recruitment scam illegally gained access to the strong room where OMR mark sheets were stored. The staff is said to have manipulated the markings in the sheet to help the candidates who have paid bribe between Rs 30-80 lakh to get high marks. So far, the CID has arrested policemen, agents, exam center staff who allegedly felicitated the scam, and candidates who paid money to secure more marks.
The recruitment to fill the vacancies of 545 posts were held in October last year. Several candidates used fraudulent ways to score high number of marks in the exam. The scam came to the fore first from Kalaburagi, which is said to be the epicenter of the scam, from where maximum number of toppers emerged.
